Fundraiser #bumbleance completed – guess how much you raised????#beeforbattens

Hello all,

This will be my final post on the fundraiser I did for http://www.bumbleance.com!

A bit of background, I decided, back in 2014, I wanted to raise funds for Bumbleance. I wanted to raise funds as I heard about the story of Tony and Mary Heffernan on the late late show, who lost both their children to Batten’s disease. I also watched a video which I don’t think many have seen, but I would highly recommend you watch it.

One of the challenges they faced( living in Kerry – which is South East coast of Ireland) is to having to travel to Dublin on a regular basis with a sick child.

I made a little map, so you can see the distances covered. It’s a trip of just under 300 Kilometers, that will take well over 3 hours, and that’s assuming you don’t get stuck in traffic.

Tony then set up Bumbleance to provide much needed transport services for children and parents that need regular ferrying to and from Dublin for those who live further afield. These can be appointments pre and post surgery, inter-hospital transfers, respite & hospice trips, scheduled treatments, and angel trips.

As they don’t get any funding, I wanted to add my voice of support and started a fundraiser.

Fundraising is not easy, and to make it all a bit interesting and different, I decided to grow Hyacinths. I grew up in Belgium and I recall seeing Hyacinths at Christmas and smelling their beautiful scents, so I wondered how that all worked.

I also wanted to learn a bit more  about video and social media, so I made a few videos together with my youngest son Alex, we had great fun!

Alexander helping with #Bumbleance Fundraiser from Katleen Bell-Bonjean on Vimeo.

I contacted Horkans, and they very kindly sponsored me for the hyacinths, compost and pots. I was so excited when I got that email, and it made it very real, I was going to do this!!

At some point during all this, I actually saw the ambulance( called Bumbleance Bumble + Ambulance) and it made me realize that this is something that is happening every day, to so many parents whose child is very ill. My kids aren’t ill, but if they were, I’d hope that there would be someone who would help us through all this.

You can check all the various stages of the growing of the Hyacinths here: here and here and here and here and here and here and here 🙂

Thanks to all my generous supporters, I raised the pricely sum of 770.80 Euros. About 250 Euros was raised online, the rest was done via direct sales or bucket collection.

I also would like to hugely thank #Horkans for sponsoring my little project! Thank you!!!

Hyacinths for #Bumbleance at Horkans in Oranmore

Hello all,

This will be the one of my last posts in my fundraiser for Bumbleance. I started growing  240 hyacinths from bulbs in September/October 2014 and delighted to see them finally flower. They started to flower as early as December, but as I had planted them at various times from October, some of them are only blooming now.

I got great support from Horkans, who sponsored me for the bulbs, pots and compost and I dropped over the the remainder of the blooming hyacinths today. I thank you for making this happen!!!

Check out some of the pictures!

#bumbleance fundraiser , some background, get your Hyacinth at Horkans in Oranmore , Co. Galway

Dear Readers,

My fundraiser is nearly coming to an end for #bumbleance. So where did it all start? I suppose it all started when I was a kid, at Christmas, smelling the lovely scent of a hyacinth!( Attached is a picture of Alex smelling a blooming Hyacinth, history has just repeated itself)

Hyacinth for #Bumblenace, gorgeous fragrance

Hyacinth for #Bumbleance, gorgeous fragrance

This made me realize that there is a way to grow hyacinths, and have them ready for Christmas. I did a bit of research and discovered there is type of hyacinth called ” prepared hyacinth” that is treated in such a way that, if you plant them in September, they’ll bloom around Christmas. Once I had figured  this part out, I thought it could  be a nice way of fundraising money, so I picked #Bumbleance, as I have been touched with the story of Liam and Saoirse Heffernan, who both passed away from Battens Disease. #Bumbleance is one initiative that has been developed by the http://www.saoirsefoundation.com/ (provide parents, families and all those affected by Batten Disease on the island of Ireland with support, networking and a credible source of information.  Bee For Battens is a 32 county organisation in Ireland and is active abroad in developing international collaboration amongst Batten Disease Support & Research Organizations. We currently hold the Presidency of the Batten Disease International Alliance.) , there is also Liam’s lodge http://liamslodge.com/ ( respite care).

I contacted Horkans, and they very kindly sponsored me for 240 bulbs of prepared hyacinths back in September. I still remember how excited I was when I got the email to say they would sponsor  me!

I then started to plant halfway October, which, looking back, was too late.. If I am to do it again, I will start planting early September, to be sure that the flowers are blooming by Christmas, or later if I wanted to have Valentine Hyacinths – that’s maybe another idea:)

And I got a bit of help from Alex too 🙂

Fast forward to end of January, and having moved some of the hyacinths into the house, it’s starting to look like a small version of Keukenhof/ Chelsea Flower show!

The hyacinths will be 5 Euros and all proceeds to go to #Bumbleance. I am using the hashtag #Bumbleance hoping that it will index better or get picked up by search engines.

710 Euros raised for #bumbleance – It’s a team effort!

Hello all,

I am delighted to say that so far I have raised 710 Euros! If you would like to donate or sponsor me, please click here!

To run a successful fundraiser you need a team of people that can help you to sell, find a good spot to sell, or bring you in contact with others. My husband is a teacher, and he brought in a flowering hyacinth into his class. People started asking questions, and before long he had a number of people who wanted to buy a hyacinth. Below is the delivery of the Hyacinths to St-Anne’s School in Ennis, Co. Clare!  Thank you to all the Staff at St-Anne’s, 140 Euros was raised!

I have another 100 flowers left or so, and will be bringing them to a few of the Horkan’s store shortly! Horkans is the company that sponsored me for the hyacinth bulbs, pots and compost!

Some of the  hyacinths are blooming now, and the smell of them is just gorgeous!! Here is Alex smelling one of the blooming hyacinths!

Hi all,

As the hyacinths are continuing to develop,  I have had some donations of people that are too far away or who’d prefer that I take care of the hyacinth, as they haven’t got green fingers:)

Here are some images of the adopted hyacinths, one is for a friend in Africa, one is for a friend in the USA, the other for a friend in the UK.

If you’d like to adopt/sponsor a Hyacinth, please click here!

Selling Hyacinths at Corrib Oil Petrol Station in Gort for #bumbleance

Hi all,

Alex and myself braved the cold weather on saturday, and set up our stall at the Corrib Oil Petrol station in Gort. I had difficulty locating a suitable table, but then my husband suggested we’d use a camping table/bench, and as it turned out that was a great choice, so we could display the plants and also take a seat. It was bitterly cold, and there had been horizontal rain earlier, but as it happened, the spot we got outside was “fairly” sheltered from the elements. Still cold, but we were well wrapped up:) I never realized, but this is a very very busy petrol station, with cars coming and going all the time! They also do a variety of foods, all freshly prepared! I saw a number of people picking up their lunch/dinner.  You’ll see some images of our stand. Alex insisted on wearing his “office” suite and although initially enthusiastic, he figured out that selling the hyacinths or asking for donations is not the easiest things to do, and requires some courage( and practise:).

gort 001

I finished around 5 O’Clock and raised 120 Euros! Some people also donated some change, but that’s in the collection box, so I can’t count that yet. Big thank you to Daniel for allowing me to pitch on the forecourt!

I had published this blogpost just before I left the house to go to Gort, and the blogpost was picked up by a friend of mine, who called over to Gort to buy 2 hyacinths. I was satisfied to see that Social Media does work! I also tweeted a few pictures, and also those favoured and retweeted!

Flowers for sale at Corrib Petrol Station Gort – Today 10th of January as from 1 PM

Hi all,

It’s been a rather wet and windy for the last few days, so I am getting Alex and myself well wrapped up for our Hyacinth flower selling event at the Corrib Petrol Station in Gort. I hope we don’ t get blown away:)!!! I brought in about 30 flowers in the house yesterday morning, so they could warm up a bit. I have noticed that once they are exposed to heat, they open up, and you can see the (still closed) flower buds. They’ll open up shortly, and will make a great gift for your mum, dad, granny, teacher or anyone who you would like to give something special! As an added bonus, they smell gorgeous!

Here are some images of the ones that I brought into the house.

So what are the initiatives and where to vote?

Steeltech Garden Sheds – Like their Facebook page here

They offer 20 000 Euros to the charity that is most suggested! So be sure to LIKE & SHARE our main page (Steeltech Garden Sheds) so we can see your Charity suggestions for 2015.Steeltech’s chosen charity for 2014 was Guide Dogs for the Blind, below is Sean Brett CEO of Steeltech Sheds presenting Roy Keane with a cheque for €20,000.

If #Bumbleance were to be given 20 000 Euros they can complete the purchase of a second Ambulance, helping so many more ill children around Ireland, and provide services the Health Service Executive is not providing to parents with seriously ill children.

Happy New year! Hyacinth are coming on nicely ! Please support #Bumbleance if you can:)

Hi all,

First of all , I’d like to wish you all a belated Merry Christmas( they really say a Happy  Christmas here) and then well, a happy New year too!! I used to say just Happy New year, but now I’d like to add a Happy and Healthy 2015.

The healthy part is something that the children that are transported in the Bumbleance don’t have, and their parents would give everything to have a healthy child. You can check out some of their stories here. There are also regular updates on the Bumbleance Facebook page and some of the trips you can track here! Until recently I had never seen the Bumbleance on the road, but then we spotted the Children’s ambulance in a petrol station near us! You can check out that post here!
